One month

It's been one month since Maya started really walking

(****throwing confetti****)

I'm not sure what to do about her walker . . . she doesn't seem interested in it at all, and doesn't use it anymore.  But it's hard to part ways with it.  I'm torn between thinking "she can walk now, she's never going to go back to leaning on the walker and pushing it around" and "but what about when we go to the mall, or big stores?  Would she ever want to lean on it if she gets tired?"

Who knows about kids and walkers?  Once they move on, it is gone for good?  Or should we hold onto it and keep carting it around?

(Vote in the poll--top right-- to weigh in, please!)

i have no knowledge or expertise, but i say hold onto it just in case. maybe don't cart it around...but if you see evidence at a store or somewhere that it could be useful, you'll have it to bring with you next time.

also...YAY, MAYA!!!

I am in my grad year of OT school and surely do not have an expertise in kids and walkers. But, from what I have been learning over the past years, I think you are totally on the right track to keep it around for events like the mall. If she isn't ready for that long distance of walking independently, it would def. be better to have the walker (which will promote more independence) than resorting back to being carried or using the stroller.
Way to go Maya!

Maya is going to be running next. She may not be a typical child, But she is just as normal as all the others. Crawling, Walking and Running will be next.

She may need to use it a while longer for long distances but soon enough she won't even have time for it. It'll be faster to just do it herself!

GO MAYA!
I would hold on to it. That's just me.

Hi Dana,
I'm a young adult (22) who has used a walker almost exclusively until about a year ago. I don't walk independently, but I do use crutches most of the time now. It might be a good idea, like you said to keep it around for long distances, or sometimes when the weather is temperamental it might be easier. Hope that helps! But YAY MAYA! So happy for her!

I voted for "Chuck that thing" because I always like to lean to the optimistic side. However, I do remember a few posts about how hard it was to find that little walker. Hmmmm, this is a tough one. I guess if you have room you might want to keep it around. Use it as decoration, put one of her cute little outfits on it and next year at this time you'll look at that and go...OMG that was so long ago!!

Hang on to it. I regret getting rid of some of my daughter's assistive devices. Not only are they helpful for long distance walking, but also, they buy her some personal space in crowded areas. Store it in the car for times that you may need it. I hope they are infrequent. Congrats to all of you!

I really like what carol says about it giving Maya some space and maybe protection from those crazy mall wallers (me and your mother) I say keep it for a while and break it out for stu's and the malls...
love ya all

I have no experience with this stuff either but my experience is that most, if not all, kids Maya's age, would get tired of walking long distances. Alice definitely ends up in the stroller at some point, when we go to the mall or any other place where we walk a lot. My instinct is say that now that she's walking like every other kid, just treat her like every other walking kid and use the stroller when she gets tired. But keep the walker because you might be able to pass it on to another family.
